The Overall
The most quintessential piece of clothing in the LIU student's wardrobe is the overall. It's worn during most activities in student life, such as ugly sittnings and parties (but not all events, read the dress code). Nearly all sections at LIU have their own overalls, including the Y-Section.
The overall of the Y-Section is black with a yellow stripe along the right leg and arm and a program specific color along the left leg and arm. The program specific colors are as follows:
Yellow: Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Data Science and Information Engineering
Green: Biomedical Engineering (bachelors and master programme)
Orange: Engineering Mathematics
Before the overall inauguration, a specific event soon after the overall sale, you are only allowed to sew on the stripes and some Y-Section specific patches sold along with the overall. The big section patch is supposed to be sewn onto the back, the smaller section patch over the heart, and the program specific patch over the right stripe somewhere on the lower thigh. Before the overall inauguration, you are only allowed to wear the overall cabbed up (fully on, with your arms in the overall sleeves) and afterwards you are expected to wear it cabbed down (with the sleeves tied around your waist).
After the overall has been inaugurated, you can start sewing on your name and patches. Your name is supposed to be sewn onto the right leg and any patches are supposed to be sewn onto your left leg until it's full, then you are allowed to move on to the rest of the overall. Events and parties usually sell an event specific patch along with the ticket and various stores across campus sell fun patches.
Some tips and rules about the overall are as follows:
- You should put patches you like closer to your crotch and patches you dislike closer to the bottom of the overall leg.
- There's a patch store, Unicrew, in the student union building Kårallen on campus Valla.
- Stripes and sewing supplies can be purchased at Bokab in Kårallen. The Y-Section overalls exclusively use the wider stripes and around 3 metres of stripe per side is usually enough.
- There's sewing machines available to borrow in Digimaker, SH (Student house). One is always available and there are more that can be booked from LIU.
- You're only allowed to wash your overall while wearing it (read take a shower with your overall on) or after getting three different bodily liquids from three different people on it.
